ASC Stingrays edge Future in U11 FA Cup final

It was a tense battle as two evenly matched sides met in the 2018 CIFA U11 Boys FA Cup final at the Annex on Saturday, 16 June. A goal in the 13th minute by Zack Brooks was the difference as Academy Stingrays held on for the win over Future Sports Club.

Both sides continued to press and both keepers were called into action as play continued to the final whistle. Parents sitting in the stands cheered on the youngsters and at the end, though there were tears for some, it was a brilliant display of football by the stars of tomorrow and they call can hold their heads high for the calibre of play they put forward.

Young Zack Brooks summed up the team’s performance like a seasoned veteran when he spoke to after the trophy presentation. “It was a really good performance for team and it was a good finish with the goal. We kind of just stuck together for the whole time as a team and that’s how we won.  There are no individuals, we’re just a team,” he said.

Meantime, Stingrays coach Greg Brooks was full of praise for is players. “It’s been a great season. The boys have really jelled as a team. More than half of the team are brand new players this year and it took a while for us to get used to each other but by the end, the boys really pulled together.”

With the new players fitting in well, Brooks said he was looking forward to an upcoming overseas trip during which Academy players would get another chance to bond with their opponents.

“We’re going to the Disney Cup in Orlando in about a month’s time, so that will be giving them a lot more exposure and we’re going to be taking two of the Future players with us as guest players. We’re also bringing a player from George Town, as well. That’s what really has been so great for me this season – all the teams and all the clubs have really got on well and helped each other. The boys get on well and I’m really pleased about that,” Brooks said.

In the semi-finals, Future SC defeated 345 FC A 2-1 and Academy SC Stingrays squeezed past newly crowned 2018 Boy’s Under 11 league champions 345 FC B 1-0.
