Back-to-back for Bodden Town

Footballers of the Week Karl Solomon and Ramon Sealy of Bodden Town FC.

The great Michael Jordan once said the following about leadership in sports: “Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.” Though he’s not known for his skills on the football field, he might very well have been speaking about the captain and vice-captain of Bodden Town Football Club.

Ramon Sealy and Karl Solomon are like fire and ice. Sealy, the captain, always appears cool and calm as he directs the team from the goal. On the other hand, Solomon, the vice-captain is an energetic player who plays with his heart on his sleeve and constantly demands the same energy from his teammates.

It is fitting that they are the most recent winners of the Cayman Sports Buzz Footballer of the Week presented by Futbolista World, being leaders on the 2016-17 Cayman Premier League champions. Sealy for his stellar performance in goal against Scholars International on 26 March, when he made a few amazing saves to keep a clean sheet in a scoreless draw. Solomon earned his award for his play against Latinos FC on 2 April, when he had inspired play in the midfield and scored two goals in his team’s 4-2 win that clinched the title.

Acknowledging that he had to be counted upon, Sealy said he could not disappoint and did what he could to deny Scholars from finding the back of the net.

“We knew that Scholars is a tough opponent, so we knew we had to keep them at bay,” he said. “A lot of the credit goes to the guys. They listen to me when I instruct them to move around. I can see the whole field as a goalkeeper, so it helps me to tell them who is behind them, who is around them, and it helps that they actually listen to me.”

Reflecting on the showing of his vice-captain against Latinos, Sealy said: “Scoring the two goals when we needed it, getting into their heads and pushed the guys on and motivating us to clinch the championship that day.

For him, Solomon is a key ingredient to Bodden Town’s success. “He is a key player for us. He is very vocal and always helping with the younger players. He is a very important part of our team.”

Meantime, Solomon was elated to lead his side to the title. “It feels good to win the league. It was a tough game. We knew they were coming hard against us, so we did what we had to do. I just came to do what I needed to do to get us the three points and clinch the league.”

Both players were presented with certificates, Futbolista World sports shirts, and gift certificates to be used toward new gear at Futbolista World. They have also been entered into a draw to win an additional prize from Futbolista World at the end of the season.

Each week, Cayman Sports Buzz will select a player for the Footballer of the Week honour based on their performance in any of the following leagues: Cayman Premier League, CIFA Women’s Premier League, CIFA First Division, CIFA youth leagues and the CUC Primary Football League/Girls Primary Football League.

At the end of the season, Cayman Sports Buzz will be presenting a more substantial award to the Footballer of the Year.
