Bodden wins Foster’s Food Fair 800m

John Bodden approaches the finish.

The 2016-17 Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association (CIASA) open water season started with a splash on Saturday, 16 September, with John Bodden picking up where he left off last season and comfortably winning the 33rd Annual Foster’s Food Fair IGA 800m Sea Swim.

Bodden led the lead group of four Stingray Swim Club swimmers down the home stretch off Governor’s Beach, pulling away as he neared the finish line of the event, which is the longest running sea swim on the CIASA calendar.

Bodden completed the swim and dashed to the finish line on the sand to end with a time of nine minutes and 51 seconds – the only swimmer of the 84 competitors under 10 minutes – to defend his 2016 title.

“Open water is always fun. You have the opportunity to race outside of the pool setting and do it with your friends. It’s always extra competitive but it is also nice that we can all do something together,” Bodden said, playing down his dominance in the open water in recent years.

Top finishers: L-R: Liam Henry, Alex Dakers, John Bodden.

Trailing him home was Alex Dakers in 10:05, with the pair of Liam Henry and Zachary Moore next up. The due sprinted to the finish, matching each other stride for stride in the water. As they hit land, Henry surged past Moore to take the third spot in 10:09, with Moore finishing in 10:10.

“That was something else…so I said whatever I do, I have to beat him [Moore] on the sprint,” Henry told CaymanSportsBuzz.com.

Jake Bailey was fifth and Jordan Crooks sixth, just ahead of Avery Lambert, the first female finisher. Raya Embury-Brown was the second female finisher and eighth overall. Rory Barrett was ninth and Elana Sinclair, the third female, rounded out the top 10.

After the 800m race was completed, younger swimmers took part in a 400m event closer to shore to get them a taste of the open water competition and prepared for future competitive events over a longer distance.
