Brac Cup is back!

2016 Brac Cup action - Johnson & Wales vs Cayman Brac FC

For a second year running, Cayman Brac will host a preseason football tournament featuring a visiting United States university team, with the staging of the 2017 Brac Cup Invitational from 25-27 August.

Like the 2016 edition, this year’s tournament will see three teams participating. The 2017 field is Florida National University, Cayman U20 Select, and Cayman Brac FC.

“The tournament is not about who can come here and who can dominate and who can win. It’s the preseason for the university, as they are getting prepared for their season in the United States,” said tournament director Mitchum Sanford, the sports instructor at the Sister Islands Department of Sports.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for Cayman’s best under-20 players to get together and to play together in preseason mode, as well as it is for our Cayman Brac FC guys to get together in a preseason event. Everybody uses it for that purpose to get themselves in shape,” Sanford added.

The Hialeah-based FNU Conquistadors play in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), finishing tied for third in the 2016 national championships.

“We get to showcase the Cayman Brac young men and, for the second year in a row, Cayman’s best under-20 players. It is so important to showcase this kind of talent to a university to show what we really have here,” Sanford said.

Last year, Johnson & Wales University from North Miami played, winning both their matches against Cayman Brac FC and the Cayman Islands National U20 Men’s Team.

All Brac Cup games will be played at the sports complex on the Bluff and kickoff at 8:00 p.m. each evening.

On Friday 25 August, hosts Cayman Brac FC face Cayman U20 Select. On Saturday 26 August, Cayman U20 Select meet Florida National University. The tournament concludes with FNU facing Cayman Brac FC on Sunday 27 August.

Sanford said the event is designed to boost sports tourism on the sister island. “It’s very important to have this. We’re into the slow season for tourism in the Cayman Islands and this is a very important tool to boost the tourism part of things,” he said, noting there were packed bleachers for all three days of last year’s event.

Among the sponsors of the event are Cayman Airways, Cayman Islands Government, the Sports Association of the Sister Islands, and the Sister Islands Sports Department.

CaymanSportsBuzz.com will have daily updates from the tournament.
