Cayman 2nd at Caribbean 4-Ball Championship

The Cayman Islands National Golf Team followed up the country’s first ever Caribbean men’s amateur team championship with a second-place finish at the Caribbean Golf Association Four Ball Championship, held last weekend at the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

The event showcased the best mid-amateur (35+), senior (50+) and super-senior (60+) golfers in the region. The format had two-person teams in each division compete over three rounds. Puerto Rico won the overall team title, while Barbados finished third.

The second-place finish represents Cayman’s best ever finish in the event. Leading the way were Michael and Philip Wight, who won the Francis & Steele-Perkins Cup in the senior division, finishing the weekend at seven under par, eight shots better than Puerto Rico. Joe DiFilippo and Robert Woods finished the weekend in eighth place.

Stephen Heal and Tracy Moore were second in the super-senior division, finishing six shots back of the Bahamas. Nitti Howe and Rocio Esau also contributed a second-place finish in the women’s mid-amateur division.

Rounding out the men’s competition, Jason Perras and Joel Dodson finished the weekend at two under par in the mid-amateur division, good for a fourth-place finish.

Barbados was the class of the tourney, finishing six shots clear of Puerto Rico at 18 under par. Stuart Reed and Tom Dillon finished eighth in the division.

“What an incredible year 2018 is proving to be for golf in Cayman. Congratulations to all our players who took part in this event and who worked hard to achieve this great result. The icing on the cake is to have brothers Michael and Philip Wight as Caribbean Senior Champions; a fantastic achievement,” Cayman Island Golf Association President Paul Woodhouse said.

The 2018 competitive golf season winds down in early December with the President’s Trophy event at the North Sound Golf Club. The 2019 competitive golf season starts up in early January with National Team qualifying, which runs through March.
