The Cayman Islands will be among 20 teams competing in the RugbyTown USA Sevens tournament in Glendale, Colorado from 25-27 August, for a US$10,000 cash prize.

Among the teams competing is one comprised of members of Fiji’s gold medal-winning team from the Rio Olympics.

The teams are grouped into four pools of five teams. Cayman has been pooled in a group with British Army (UK), Glendale Merlins (Glendale, Colorado), Negro y Azul (Austin, Texas), Negro y Azul (Austin, Texas), and SoCal Griffins (Southern California).

They will open play on 25 August with three games before completing group play on 26 August.

In pool play, each team plays every other team once. At the end of pool play, the teams in each pool are ranked. All the teams that won the most games in their pool are grouped together in a new pool. The teams that won the second-most games are grouped together, and so on, organisers explained.

“As the years have gone on, the level of competition has improved; the tourney is now truly an international tournament,” said tournament director Mark Bullock. “Teams from overseas want to come here.”
