- Updated: 29 August 2018
The Cayman Islands duo of Marlene West and Cameron Stafford were one win away Tuesday evening (28 August) from playing for the gold medal in the mixed doubles competition at the Pan American Squash Championships.
West and Stafford beat opponents from Bermuda and Argentina on their way to setting up a semi-final showdown against the Canadian pair of Mike Mccue and Danielle Letourneau on Wednesday morning at South Sound Squash Club.
In their first-round match, the Cayman players defeated Bermuda’s Nike Kyme and Emma Keane 11-5, 11-2 before another straight game victory over Argentina’s Ricardo Mérida and Winifer Bonilla 11-9, 11-9.
West and Stafford are coming off a bronze medal performance at the CAC Games in Colombia earlier this summer.
Another pair who medalled for Cayman in Colombia was Eilidh Bridgeman and Jade Pitcairn. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s doubles on Tuesday. In their opening round match, they faced Bermuda’s Alex Furtado and Laura Robinson. After losing the first game 11-10, they rebounded to take the next two 11-6, 11-8.
In the quarterfinals, they came up against the American pair of Amanda and Sabrina Sobhy and lost 11-4, 11-3.
In men’s doubles, Jake Kelly and Julian Jervis advanced to the second round with a bye and met the Brazilian pair of Diego Gobbi and Vinicius Rodrigues. The Brazilians emerged victorious in straight games: 11-6, 11-5.
The Pan Am Squash Championships runs until Saturday. The team competition follows the doubles.
