Cayman Prep, Triple C split PSA football titles

Triple C (red) def. St Ignatius to win the Boys' Blue Division.

Cayman Prep and Triple C School took home champions trophies at the most recent Private Schools Association (PSA) Football Tournament played at the Camana Bay Sports Complex.

The tournament on 20 September featured two boys’ divisions – blue and white – and a girls’ division with the top four teams in each after the group stage advancing to the semi-finals. The boys’ blue division generally featured some of the schools’ older and stronger players, although some quality talent was evident in the white division.

Jackson Kirkconnell scored the winner for Cayman Prep in the White final.

In the Blue Division final, Triple C jumped to an instant lead with a shot from the midfield mark rocketing into the back of the net. Another goal followed in the first half before St Ignatius pulled one back before the whistle. When St Ignatius hit another strike, it was anyone’s game and extra time seemed like a distinct possibility but a late goal from Triple C saw them successfully defend their title from the last tournament in February.

Earlier in the White Division final, a sensational extra time golden goal from Jackson Kirkconnell saw Cayman Prep get by another St Ignatius side in a highly competitive match. With the score level at three goals apiece after regulation, a penalty shootout loomed until Cayman Islands national U15 midfielder Kirkconnell collected the ball at the top of the box and drilled it past the St Ignatius keeper to seal the deal to give Cayman Prep the 4-3 win and the trophy.

Cayman Prep schoolmates Molly Kehoe (pink) and Lauren Scott (blue) faced each other in the final.

Meantime, the Girls’ final saw two Cayman Prep teams squaring off in the final. After a shootout, it was the Cayman Prep ‘Blue’ girls holding on to beat their schoolmates on the ‘Pink’ team. This gave Cayman Prep girls their seventh straight title dating back to 2012.
