Cayman rugby 7s tune-up for important tournaments

The Borrelli Walsh Cayman Rugby 7s Team has set is focus on qualifying for two major international competitions in 2018 – the Commonwealth Games and the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Securing a spot for these competitions will come from a good showing at the Rugby Americas North Championships or RAN 7s in Mexico on 24-25 November. Ahead of that, the team has headed to Colorado to participate in the Rugbytown 7s tournament this weekend (25-27 August).

The tournament has built up a name for itself over the past several years as being a premier tournament in North America and will feature a hand full of players from the Fijian national side who earned gold in Rio last year.

Cayman is in Pool D along with the British Army (U.K.), Glendale Merlins (Colorado), Negro y Azul (Texas) and SoCal Griffins (California).

Other teams in the tournament are: Atavus All-Stars, Canadian Maple Leafs, Denver 7s Selects, Ramblin’ Jesters (UK team), Royal Air Force Spitfires, Rugby Utah, Tiger Rugby, Upright Rugby Rogues (Canada), USA All-Americans, Viti Barbarians (Fiji), US Air Force, and US Army.

Cayman’s Pool D schedule is:

25 August
4:30 p.m.             Socal Griffins vs Cayman Islands
7:10 p.m.             Cayman Islands vs Negro y Azul
9:00 p.m.             British Army vs Cayman Islands

26 August
1:30 p.m.             Cayman Islands vs Glendale Merlins

The players travelling are Justin Wight, Paul Westin, Phil Parker, Robbie Cribb, Iain Currie, Ranald Henderson, Edward Westin, Michael Wilson, Dave Stringer, Will Hayward, Keswick Wright and Darien Montague.

The management team include Jovan Bowles (CRFU technical director), Rhian Minty (manager), Dwain McGuiness (physio) and Brad Laing (strength & conditioning coach).
