Cayman sailors in Antigua for World Opti Championships
- Updated: 30 June 2019

A team of young sailors has headed to Antigua and Barbuda to represent the Cayman Islands at the 2019 Optimist World Championships.
The team for the 6-16 July competition is: 14-year-old Matheo Capasso and 13-year olds Jaspar Nielsen, James Costa and Xavier Marshall. They arrived in the Eastern Caribbean country on Friday, 28 July.
This year, 260 of the best young sailors from a record-setting number of 64 countries will participate.
The Cayman Islands team will benefit from seven days of training ahead of the event being held in English Harbour on the southern coast of Antigua.
Reports indicate that conditions call for high winds and big waves and sailors will be expected to exert steady effort over a solid eight consecutive days of racing, including six in the individual fleet race competition and two days in the team event.
The Optimist, which is
also commonly referred to as “opti”, is a small,
single-handed sailing dinghy intended for use by children up to the age of 15.
