Cayman’s boys remain unbeaten
- Updated: 6 August 2019

The Cayman Islands has remained undefeated after two games at the 2019 Concacaf Boys U15 Championships underway in Bradenton, Florida.
After beating Bahamas 1-0 in their opener on Monday, the Cayman Islands matched Nicaragua and held on for a scoreless draw on Tuesday 6 August. Goalkeeper Andrea Tognazzo had a stellar game between the pipes.
After the result, the Cayman Islands is tied with Nicaragua on four points but sit second due to Central Americans’ superior goal difference (+3 to +1) with one game of group play remaining. Guyana is third with three points after hammering Bahamas 5-1 on Tuesday. Bahamas are bottom of the group without a point.
Cayman’s boys, coached by Lovane Joven, are in with a shot of advancing. The group winner will advance to play in the division two semi-finals. However, they will likely need a convincing showing against Guyana on Thursday while hoping for the Bahamas to pull off an upset versus the heavily favoured Nicaraguans.
The youth tournament, which will provide access to international football for over 750 boys from across North America, Central America and the Caribbean, will be disputed in two rounds. For the first-round group phase, the 42 participating teams have been divided into three divisions according to the Concacaf Men’s Under-17 Ranking as of 2019, ensuring sporting balance and a minimum number of four matches for each team.
Division One is made up by the top 14 ranked Concacaf teams, as well as Slovenia and Portugal. The 16 teams have been divided into four groups of four teams each (Groups A-D). After round robin play, the four group winners and the four second place finishers will advance to the quarterfinals to play for the Championship. The third and fourth place finishers will play an additional match to determine their final position in the division.
Division Two comprises the next 15 best ranked Concacaf teams and Israel. This is the section that the Cayman Islands has been placed in. The 16 teams have been divided into four groups of four teams each (Groups E-H). After round robin play, the four group winners will advance to the semi-finals to play for the divisional championship. The second, third and fourth place finishers will play an additional match to determine their final position in the division.
Division Three is made up by the lowest 10 ranked Concacaf teams. The teams have been divided into two groups of five teams each (Groups I and J). After round robin play, the group winners will advance to the divisional final, while the remaining teams will play an additional match to determine their final position in the division.
