CIVF to host Doubles Beach Volleyball Series

The Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation (CIVF) will launch its first ever Doubles Beach Volleyball tournament series in February.

Intended to establish a local beach volleyball player ranking, the tournament series is open to all residents and Cayman National Team players. The first tournament will be taking place on Sunday, 24 February at the West Bay Public Beach.

Registration will be limited to a total of 16 teams, so interested players are encouraged to register as quickly as possible. Dates for the additional three tournaments will be released within the coming weeks.

The tournament will also be the final step in a five week tryout, for potential new additions to the National Beach Volleyball Training Programme. The CIVF National Team coaches will have open beach practices every Wednesday from 23 January through 20 February at the West Bay Public Beach, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. The open practices will allow the coaches to assess players in a practice setting, in addition to watching them in competition at the tournament on February 24th.

Javid Ali, National Beach Volleyball Coach, explained that the tryout is not a guarantee that any new players will be added to the National Team Programme. “Selection of new players will depend on the players’ level of skill or athletic potential and it is not guaranteed that we will identify those characteristics in any of the players who tryout this time,” Ali said, “but we are excited to see who is out there”.

There is no cost to attend the practices and to register, interested players should email sjavidali76@gmail.com.

CIVF Technical Director, Kevin Solomon explained that the tournament series is another step in the Federation’s continuing effort to grow the sport of beach volleyball on the Island and to introduce more people to this fun and dynamic sport.

“It is great to see the growing number of young people playing volleyball”, Mr. Solomon said. “I am also excited by the progress we are seeing in the development of the youth players who have been consistently training since we launched the youth programme just two years ago.”

Mr. Solomon said the February tournament would also serve as one of several criteria for selection of the teams that will be sent to this year’s Island Games, which takes place in July. To be considered for selection for the Island Games, players are required to compete in this tournament.

The tournament format will comprise male and female divisions and will be pool play, followed by single elimination playoffs. There will be a gold and silver bracket, to allow all players to compete in playoffs. Players must be 13 years of age or older and the cost to register is $25 per player. Prizes will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

To register, email assistant@civf.ky the names, email address and date of birth of the two players in your team. There will be no cover charge to attend the event and spectators are welcome to come out and cheer on the players.
