CRFU hosts Inter-Primary Tag Ruby tournament
- Updated: 12 December 2018
On Tuesday, 11 December 2013, Cayman Rugby Football Union hosted its annual Inter-Primary TAG Rugby Tournament. Since the start of the school year the CRFU has been working with various public and private primary schools on island to introduce the sport of rugby to students and prepare them for this tournament.
Many of the schools on island are becoming more aware of rugby and the benefits it has for students. Rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and this non-contact version is a great way to introduce new people to the sport. There are many skills which are learnt through rugby which can cross over into other areas of life both on and off the sporting fields (hand-eye coordination, balance, agility, spatial awareness, communication, multi-tasking, discipline, team work, a strong work ethic, respect, integrity to name a few).
At the tournament there was a girls’ division and a boys’ division for each of the 3 Year groups involved (Years 4, 5, & 6).
In the Boys Year 4 division, Prep 1 and CIS started strong both picking up wins in the first round against St. Ignatius and Prep 2 respectively. It continued to be a close division up as the two teams tied 2-2 in the second round. Round 3 ended with Prep 1 taking final victory against Prep 2 to claim the division title, and CIS finishing with another tie against St. Ignatius to claim 2nd. Samuel Burrell from St. Ignatius received the individual award for stand out player in the division.
In the Girls Year 4 division it was St. Ignatius and CIS who took the victories in Round 1 against Prep 1 and Prep 2 respectively. They both won again in round 2 leaving it to their match up against each other in round 3, CIS coming away with a 3-2 victory over St. Ignatius to win the division with a clean sweep. St. Ignatius finishing in 2nd. Reece Bateson from CIS received the individual award for stand out player in the division.
In the Boys Year 5 division, Prep 1 won their first 2 games against St. Ignatius and CIS 2, then tied CIS 1 in round 3, before finishing with a win against Prep 2 in round 4 to claim the division title. St. Ignatius took 2nd place with 2 wins, a tie, and a loss. Sam Hayward from Cayman Prep received the individual award for stand out player in the division.
In the Girls Year 5 division, Prep 1 got off to a good start with a 3-2 victory over St. Ignatius. St. Ignatius went on to win their other 2 games, while Prep 1 went on to tie CIS in round 2, but with a 4-3 win over Prep 2 in the 3rd round, Prep 1 claimed the division title with 2 wins and 1 tie, while St. Ignatius finished 2nd with 2 wins and 1 loss. Doireann Lynch from St. Ignatius received the individual award for stand out player in the division.
