Cricketers sweep Argentina series
- Updated: 27 February 2017
Cayman’s national cricket team returns home Monday after sweeping Argentina in a three-match series in Buenos Aires to gain promotion to ICC World Cricket League Division 5. Having already won the series, Cayman defeated the hosts by five wickets on Saturday.
Argentina won the toss and elected to bat at the Hurlingham Club on 25 February, in the first game of the tournament that conditions allowed for an on-time start, after rain impacted the starts of the earlier fixtures.
Argentina lost two early wickets, including Day 1 Man of the Match Matias Paterlini for three runs that saw them slump to 19 runs for two wickets.
They struggled to really get going at all in their innings, being bundled out for 96 in 36 overs with Pablo Ferguson top scoring with 26. Cayman’s bowlers Corey Cato, Neil Coley, and Kevon Bazil each took two wickets.
Cayman went in to bat prior to the lunch break and came out swinging, with 25 off the first 3 overs. Argentina looked to be back in the game when they stumped Paul Chin first ball after lunch to have the Cayman pegged back at 53 for five, before Deno McInnis with 28 runs and Conroy Wright’s 24 from 22 guided the tourists home.
Daniel Sutton was the pick of the Argentine bowlers with two wickets for 11 runs, as Cayman cruised home in the 21st over.
Post-match awards were presented to Argentine Matias Paterlini for Day 1 Man of the Match (4 for 24 and scored 28). Day 2’s Man of the Match was Cayman’s Conroy Wright who took 4 for 12 and then backed up with 1 for 8 with 24 runs to also take the game 3 award.
Wright, who took nine wickets in the three games, was also named Bowler of the Series and Player of the series. Deno McInnis took the batsman of the series award.
“We are extremely proud of the squad and pleased that they have once again secured a place for Cayman Cricket in the World Cricket League,” Cayman Cricket’s president, Abali Hoilett told CaymanSportsBuzz.com.
“This achievement is a great result and is the reward for the rebuilding and changes that we have effected over the last two and half years. Cayman Cricket’s journey is just beginning and we look forward to reaching various milestones in our youth, senior and women’s programs,” Hoilett added.
