CUC Youth Championships: Day 1 results
- Updated: 24 February 2018

The opening evening of the 2018 CUC Youth and CARIFTA Track and Field Championships saw rising stars putting on a show at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex on 23 February.
Competitive finals in the U17 Girls, U17 Boys, and U20 Men 100m sprints brought the crowd to life as the evening’s competition closed. Ashante Graham of Falcon Athletics (12.59) edged Danneika Lyn of Mustang Track Club (12.60) and Tori-Ann Gonez (12.61) in a tight finish of the U17 Girls event.
Mustang Track Club’s Derrick Francis and Neil Brown of HyTech Tigers tied in the U17 Boys sprint. Both were clocked at 11.71 seconds. Francis, however, pulled up as he crossed the line with an apparent hamstring injury.
Rasheem Brown, who returned home from Milligan College in Tennessee for the meet, won the U20 Men’s 100m in his season debut.
In the field, all three competitors in the U17 Girls javelin recorded personal bests. Kylie Porter of HyTech Tigers won with 10.36m, with YaNelli Dawkins of Mustang Track Club second with 8.82m and HyTech’s Shal-Mauve Campbell third with 7.08m. Although Porter did not make the CARIFTA qualifying standard, she said she was confident about attaining it at the Inter-Secondary Track and Field Championships next week.
Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC) Limited’s President and CEO Richard Hew was on hand as the championships opened. “It is CUC’s pleasure to continue supporting the event. It is very important for the CIAA to develop these young athletes,” he told the crowd, as he wished the competitors all the best as the meet got underway.
