Elite women move to top of table

Shanice Monteith (10) scored a pair for Elite vs Roma United.

Elite Sports Club and Sunset Football Club picked up wins in the latest round of matches in the 2018/19 Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) Women’s League on 16 and 17 March. The results mean Elite retakes the top spot in the standings ahead of Scholars International.

Scholars International, who came into the weekend with a two-point lead at the top of the table, fell 4-2 at the hands of Sunset FC at Ed Bush Sports Complex on Saturday. Molly Kehoe scored a brace (39’ and 60’) for Sunset with other goals for the winners coming from Katy Bayles (25’) and Abigail Ramirez (43’). Arie Smith (52’) and Kessie McCoy (67’) found the back of the net for Scholars.

This was Scholars first loss through nine games in the league.

A day later, Elite Sports Club took on Roma United, the latter of which was seeking their first league win.

Roma’s ladies put up a battle and trailed 1-0 at the half after being undone by an own-goal in the 18th minute. Elite captain Shanice Monteith scored twice in quick succession (69’ and 72’) with Tamoy Phillips adding another in the 74th to complete the 4-0 win. Elite are undefeated this season.

Monteith and Kehoe both brought their season tally to five goals apiece, which put them in a three-way tie with Sabrina Suberan of Scholars as the leading scorers through nine games.
