Elite women win 2019 President’s Cup

A 60th minute goal from substitute Ethana Villalobos secured a win for Elite Sports Club over Roma United in the final of the 2019 Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) Women’s President’s Cup on 6 March.

After a scoreless first half in which both sides had chances to open their accounts, Elite head coach Martha Godet implored her ladies to do what they needed to get the winning goal.

Captain Shanice Monteith stepped up to take a corner and placed in into the box, where Villalobos, who came on in the first half, headed it past Roma United keeper Sophie Roberts. That was all the scoring needed to give Elite another piece of hardware for their trophy cabinet.

Ethana Villalobos (centre) is congratulated by her teammates after scoring.

“It was a good feeling,” Villalobos said of the winner. “I feel very proud.”

She added about her team’s performance: “It was good but it could have been better. We could have pushed more and gave more effort.

For Roma’s part, making it to a cup final was a step in the right direction. They sent the prior cup winners, Sunset Football Club packing in the semi-finals, with their first competitive win. The new team from Fusion FC is playing under the banner of Roma United this season and are yet to win in league play after eight games.

The CIFA Women’s League resumes on 16 March when Scholars International and Sunset FC meet at Ed Bush Sports Complex at 6:00pm. Roma United and Elite Sports Club will face each other again on 17 March at the Annex for a 5:00pm kick-off.

Scholars are atop the table with 18 points, two ahead of Elite. Sunset sit third with eight points and Roma has one point.
