Free training for boxing refs and judges

The Cayman Islands Boxing Association Ltd is offering free training for people interested in gaining qualification as referees and judges, as it seeks to widen its pool of officials.

Training sessions are being held Monday 15 January through Thursday 18 January at the Dalmain Ebanks Boxing Gym from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Another half-day session is also being planned on 20 or 21 January based on the availability of participants. People who are interested but can’t make all the scheduled sessions will be given the opportunity to arrange for additional training the following week.

A mandatory assessment will be conducted at the Elite Marble and Granite Fight Night featuring amateur boxers from the Cayman Islands and the United States Virgin Islands on 27 January.

CIBA President Leyla Jackson urged interested people to email her at as soon as possible.

Jackson said interested parties do not need to have a deep knowledge of boxing to sign up for the training. “You will learn everything that you need to know over the course. You merely need to have an interest, be willing to learn and assist the programme.”

She said besides the obvious benefits of helping a registered non-profit organisation and the youth of Cayman, there are personal benefits to completing the course as well.

“The course will be a national level qualification for your resume. Being a high-level R&J can lead to travel and other qualifications opportunities – if you want to pursue it to the next level there is potential to undertake AIBA 1*, 2* and 3* training to eventually reach Olympic level,” Jackson said.
