Girls teams added, Dwight Yorke to attend Academy’s Mini Slam

More than 140 young footballers are set to lace up their boots for Academy Sports Club’s second Mini Slam Cup on Monday, 23 January, which will feature the presence of one of the greatest Caribbean players ever.

This is the second Mini Slam Cup that the club is hosting, after the first was a big hit in December. Unlike the first event, which featured only Under-11 Boys and Under-13 Boys, the Heroes Day tournament will feature an Under-13 Girls division.

“Academy would like to see girls football grow in the country and we have added a girls division to ensure that our young girls can join in the competition and have some fun while developing their skills,” said Paul Byles, one of the club’s youth coaches and the man behind the creation of the Mini Slam Cup.

“At Academy, we have a new girls team with players aged nine to 12 years old and I’m sure they, along with all the other players from clubs across the island are very excited to participate in the January Mini Slam,” he added.

The participating teams are: U11 Boys: Academy SC, Savannah Tigers FC, Sunset FC, Cayman Prep, Prospect FC, Future SC, and ESM. U13 Boys: Academy SC, Savannah Tigers FC, Sunset FC, Prospect FC, Future SC and ESM. U13 Girls: Academy SC, Sunset FC, Savannah Tigers FC and Prospect FC.

The action kicks off at 9:00 a.m. at the club’s training facility on Outpost Street, George Town. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Cayman Prep won the U11 Mini Slam in December, with Tigers FC “A” the runners-up. Cayman Athletic Sports Club won the U13 title ahead of runners-up, Future FC.

A big attraction at the tournament will be the presence of Trinidad and Tobago footballing Legend Dwight Yorke. The former Manchester United and Aston Villa star will be on hand as part of a tour showcasing the English FA Cup trophy – a promotion organised by Flow. The telecoms firm is a sponsor of the event.

“We are very grateful to Flow for their partnership in our January Mini Slam which helps us to add the exhibition match as that gives over 140 young players a great opportunity to watch an exciting international U17 match,” Byles said.

The Under-17 match will be an exhibition between Academy Sports Club and Montego Bay United FC from Jamaica. That game starts at 3:00 p.m.
