Golfers begin national team qualifying
- Updated: 16 January 2018
A pair of golfers finished under-par after the first round of qualifying for the Cayman Islands national team to compete in the 2018 Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships to be hosted here later this year.
Michael Wight shot -2 (69) as the leader on 13 January at North Sound Golf Club, with teenager Andrew Jarvis on his heels with -1 (70).
“The wind wasn’t normally as strong as we’ve had it. So, it was a good chance to score today,” Wight said after his round.
The veteran golfer said he did a lot better than he expected, especially with most players still finding their competitive form this early in the season.
“I didn’t make any bogeys. I had 16 pars and two birdies. I was just pretty solid all day. I was hitting a lot of greens, so it ended up being a nice round,” Wight said.
Aaron Jarvis and Payten Wight were tied for third on the leaderboard with +3 (74), with Joel Dodson and Paul Wammer a stroke behind. Three others – Serge Berube, Giles Hobday and Brian Ross – shot +5 (76). Tracy Moore rounded out the top 10 with a score of +6 (77).
In all, 24 males and three females teed off.
Junior player Holly McLean holds the lead among the ladies, having shot 80, ahead of another junior, Lauren Needham (85) and Emma Woodhouse (98).
The Cayman Islands Golf Association has scheduled are six rounds of play to determine who will make the cut. The next qualifying event is scheduled for 27 January.
The Cayman Islands matched its best ever away finish at the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships with third place last year in the Dominican Republic. The team was comprised of Justin Hastings, Aaron Jarvis, Andrew Jarvis, Brian Ross, Michael Wight and Payten Wight.
Cayman’s best finish was second when it hosted the tournament in 2008.
