Golfers come out for CIGA President’s Trophy
- Updated: 29 November 2016

Around 80 golfers competed in the 2016 Cayman Islands Golf Association President’s Trophy on Saturday, 26 November, at North Sound Golf Club.
Among those playing in the four categories – Men, Seniors, Super Seniors, and Women – were some of the island’s top young golfers, including Andrew Jarvis and Holly McLean, who won the junior championships earlier in the year.
At the end of 18 holes, Andrew Linford won the men’s trophy with a net score of 66, with Neil Purton second (67) and Greg O’Driscoll third (68). Jarvis continued a good year on the course. His round of 68 was the lowest gross score of the day. In all, seven players in the men’s category were under par – the others: Daniel Kirkconnell (68), Brandon Smith (69) and Tom Dillon (70).
Meantime, Isabel Mendes ended with a two-stroke victory over Maria Butler to claim the women’s hardware. Mendes finished with a net score of 68, while Butler had 70. Judy Van Liere shot 72 and Rocio Esau 73.
Mick Whitworth won the seniors’ event with a net total of 69. Dave Champoux was second, two strokes back with 71. Nigel Kellow and Garth MacDonald were next in line with 72 strokes each.
Bill Knibloe enjoyed a four-stroke win in the super seniors ahead of Robert Oosterwyk. Knibloe shot a net score of 64 compared to Oosterwyk’s 68. Richard Jones was third with 72.
While the temperature was rather cool, golfers faced windy conditions on the course but that didn’t appear to dampen spirits of those who turned out.
“The turnout is great. There is a lot of competition for time on the island and this weekend being (U.S.) Thanksgiving, a lot of our regulars are away. So, we’re missing six to 10 people who would have regularly played. So, this turnout of 80 is terrific,” said CIGA president, Paul Woodhouse.
Closest to the pin contests were also held on four holes. Jim Schubert, who was seventh among seniors with 77, was closest to the pin on 11 and 13. Michael Wight, who shot 72 on the day, won the competition for hole #1. The winner of the closest to the pin contest for #9 was Scott Kapuscinski. He shot 75 on the day.
“All in all, a great day,” Woodhouse summarised.
