Greenidge and Haynes visit Cayman
- Updated: 15 March 2017

The legendary West Indies opening pair of Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes arrived in Grand Cayman on Wednesday, 15 March, ahead of a weekend of events organised by Cayman Cricket.
The retired cricketers are the headliners of a Cayman Cricket fundraiser. They were welcomed at Owen Roberts International Airport by Honorary Consul to Barbados, Juliette Gooding; as well as Cayman Cricket’s president Abali Hoilett and vice president Hector Robinson QC.
The Legends Reunited event features a golf tournament on Friday and a gala dinner on Saturday.
They will also attend a clinic led by local coaches at Smith Road Oval Saturday morning starting at 10:00 a.m. A Cayman Cricket representative told CaymanSportsBuzz.com the plan is to have the legends observe the clinic, mingle with the public and give a pep talk to young cricketers.
Greenidge and Haynes, both from Barbados, teamed up to form the most dominant opening partnership throughout the 1980s. Together, they made more than 6,000 runs together with 16 hundred-run stands as a pair.
Cayman Cricket is in the process of a five-year development plan aimed at revitalising the sport locally, starting at the youth level, with the objective of sustainable long-term growth and performance at the senior level.
Cayman Cricket is an associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC). In addition to funding it receives from the ICC, the association gets financial support from government, which has identified cricket as one of the islands’ focus sports.
“Even with the funding received from the ICC and the government, there is a significant shortfall in the level of funding required by Cayman Cricket to fully implement the Development Plan,” the Cayman Cricket spokesperson said.
“As a further part of its drive to meet its funding requirements, but also to raise the visibility and profile of the game in the Islands, Cayman Cricket aims to organise some relatively ambitious various fund raising events. The first of these events is Cayman Cricket’s Legends Reunited Golf Tournament and Gala Dinner,” the spokesperson added.
