Iguanas pull of historic triple

John Doak Tradeview Markets Iguanas pulled off an historic feat when they defeated Fidelity Cayman Storm 19-5 to win the Cayman Rugby Football Union (CRFU) Vase Final, their third title of the 2018 domestic XV’s season. This is the first time one club has won all three titles in the same season.

Iguanas took a 7-0 lead early thanks to a try from captain Hannie van Huyssteen. They kept pressing for more but a combination of errors and solid defence from the Storm, there would be no addition to their scoreboard advantage at the half.

Janko Conradie and Grabe van Huyssteen added tries in the second half before the Storm got on the board. The Storm tried for a late surge but there weren’t enough ticks on the clock, plus the Iguanas stubbornly defended their lead to hold on for the 19-5 win.

“Today’s win goes down to hard work throughout the whole season,” said Hannie van Huyssteen. “The game plan was to just stick to the basics, try to minimise errors and the team played really well. I’m very proud of the boys.”

“We were building up to this game and the team has been playing better and better every week. The Storm gave us a really good go for our money. They were up for it today and made it such a tough game.”

Israel Hawkins of the Iguanas was named MVP.

Two weeks earlier, the Iguanas celebrated winning the Alex Alexander Memorial Championship, with five victories against one loss to edge Advance Fire Buccaneers for the title. In January, they also defeated the Storm to raise the Heineken Charity Shield.

“The season overall was really good. The guys were really good. We had good numbers at training all season. It was a great privilege being the captain of the team this year. It was such good camaraderie among the team,” van Huyssteen said.
