Jr golfers tee off Digicel series

The Digicel Junior Golf Series got off to a swinging start on Sunday, 20 November, as two dozen young golfers took to the course at the North Sound Golf Club. A tight finish in the boys nine-hole event was a highlight of the day.
Zach Brooks squeaked out a one-stroke win over Danny Lyne. Brooks shot 42 and Lyne 43. Sam McLean was third with 47, one ahead of fourth placed Matthew Rees.
In the girls’ event, Holly McLean continued to show her class, winning the red tee 18-hole contest by 17 strokes. McLean shot 88 on the day, well ahead of Tabitha Hawkins (105) and Lauren Needham (117).
Beth Walton won the girls’ nine-hole event. Her 56 was nine strokes better than the score posted by the joint second place finishers Bethany Hawkins and Lily Marsh (65).
It was a day for the Andrews to shine in the other boys’ events.
Andrew Jarvis scored a four-stroke victory in the boys’ white tees 18-hole group. He shot 72. Justin Hastings was second with 76 strokes. Joe Purton was third with 85 strokes and Derek Peene fourth with 99.
Andrew Hastings was atop the leader board in the red tee 18-hole contest. His 84 strokes were four ahead of James Bould, who finished second. Todd Purton was a further three strokes behind with 91.
James Rees was the only player in the boys’ nine-hole red tee event. He shot 46.
The next Digicel Junior Series event is scheduled for Sunday, 11 December, 2016. The juniors are expected back on the course this Saturday (26 November) for the Cayman Islands Golf Association President’s Trophy tournament, when as many as 70 golfers are due to compete.
