Kicking it on the sand

The Cayman Islands Select women’s football team hosted the visiting Ohio Wesleyan University team for an afternoon of football with a difference on Wednesday 10 August.
Having played two friendlies on the grass pitch at Truman Bodden Sports Complex earlier in the week, the teams switched surfaces and played on the sand at Public Beach.
Initially scheduled to play two matches, both sides enjoyed the activity enough to ask for a third match. This was in part due to the teams splitting the two games that were initially arranged.
The Cayman team scored twice before the break in the first game and held on for a 2-1 win. In the second match, Ohio Wesleyan settled in and won comfortable 6-1. In the rubber match, it was a more competitive affair than the second, with a second half goal by OWU breaking a 1-1 first half deadlock for a 2-1 win.
This capped off a week of matches for the Division III school from the US. On Sunday, they played to a 2-2 draw against the Cayman Islands Select Women’s Team and the Cayman Islands U15 Girls team. On Tuesday, Ohio Wesleyan beat Cayman Islands Select 2-0 in another exhibition.
The team from Delaware, Ohio is in Grand Cayman for a week-long preseason training camp.
