The Lady Warriors fought off a spirited challenge from National Cement Islanders to win game one of the Cayman Islands Basketball Association’s 2018 National Women’s League finals on 17 June.
After a tight first half that saw the Warriors hold a narrow 31-30 lead at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre, experience proved to be the difference down the stretch. With only a four-point gap at the end of the third, the Lady Warriors pulled away for a 55-46 win.
Courtisha Ebanks and Hannah Parchment led the way for the three-time defending champs. Ebanks posted figures of 18 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Parchment had 16 points and four rebounds. Michal Segal added 13 points, three rebounds and two steals. Despite not hitting a shot from the field, Sade Wood found other ways to contribute with nine rebounds, nine assists and three steals.
For the Islanders, playing in their first finals, Oneissha Cayasso dropped 19 points, while hauling in seven boards and dishing four assists to go with three steals. Scimone Campbell-Chin had 12 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and two blocks, while Stacey-Ann Kelly had 11 points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
Game two of the best-of-three series is Tuesday, 19 June at the ARC. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. A win would give the Lady Warriors their fourth straight title and seventh overall.
