Martinez switches Portuguese clubs
- Updated: 9 January 2018

Cayman Islands professional footballer Sebastian Martinez has announced a switch of clubs in Portugal.
The teenager, who made the move on a two-year deal to Leixões SC from Swindon Town in England last summer, has switched to Associação Académica de Coimbra. He announced the move on 8 January, 2018. Both Leixões SC and Académica play in LigaPro, the Portuguese second division.
“I have great news to share with you all! With a new year comes new challenges and dreams; I am excited to announce that with the opening of the transfer window 1 January 2018 I am now officially an Académica player,” Martinez posted on his official Facebook page.
“I am honored to sign for a legendary club like Associação Académica de Coimbra, Portugal’s oldest football club, and to join other legends such as Russell Latapy in wearing the Académica jersey,” he added.
Martinez thanked all those who have supported him on his journey, especially Swindon Town and Leixões SC. “I am looking forward to this new challenge and next step in my professional career,” he said, adding “Avante e para cima!” – the Portuguese for “onwards and upwards”.
As of 8 January, Académica was second in the LigaPro table, two points ahead of Leixões SC in fourth.
In an interview with CaymanSportsBuzz.com in September, Martinez spoke about his plans for his professional career.
“Hopefully, I can succeed in Portugal over the next couple of years and develop into a complete player and play in the first division and see where I go from there. It’s very much the beginning and I still have a lot of hard work ahead of me,” Martinez said.
We have reached out to Martinez’s representatives for further details about the transfer.
