McFarlane shuts down attackers
- Updated: 10 June 2017

On a dominant team, it’s easy to overlook the contributions of a consistent performers. That’s often the case with 2016-17 Cayman Premier League champions Bodden Town Football Club, but in the FA Cup quarterfinals on 4 June, one regular factor in their equation of success stood out.
In the team’s 1-0 win over rivals Elite, defender Andre McFarlane shut down multiple attacks and frustrated forwards and midfielders all afternoon long. His efforts in the hard-fought contest earned him the honour of being named Cayman Sports Buzz Footballer of the Week presented by Futblista World.
“I just react to each play. My teammates trust me to have their backs whenever the ball is in my area. Being that they trust me, they allow me to position the team to set the defence up and then it comes down to me reading the game afterwards,” McFarlane said.
“It was a really tough match. Both teams came out to win the game. I think what separated us from them was that we were able to take our chances and also the unity in the team. We fought a lot harder for each other,” he added.
With the league championship locked up comfortably two months ago, there has been a singular focus for the squad in purple: adding this season’s FA Cup to their collection. Next up in their way is Scholars International, who beat them in the CIFA President’s Cup final in March.
“Scholars is another food team. We’ve had a few good sessions this week and hopefully we can come away with the win,” McFarlane said.
At a brief presentation, he was awarded a certificate, a Futbolista World sports shirt, and a gift certificate to be used toward new gear at Futbolista World. He has also been entered into a draw to win an additional prize from Futbolista World at the end of the season.
Each week, Cayman Sports Buzz will select a player for the Footballer of the Week honour based on their performance in any of the following leagues: Cayman Premier League, CIFA Women’s Premier League, CIFA First Division, CIFA youth leagues and the CUC Primary Football League/Girls Primary Football League.
At the end of the season, Cayman Sports Buzz will be presenting a more substantial award to the Footballer of the Year.
