Patterson earns All-American honours
- Updated: 12 March 2018
**Updated: Earlier report mistakenly stated long jump instead of triple jump**
Cayman Islands athlete Nathanael “Nate” Patterson, competing for Wingate University, finished seventh in the men’s triple jump at the 2018 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in Pittsburg, Kansas on 10 March. He also earned 1st Team All-American honours for his performance.
The senior leaped to 15.35m (50ft 4 ½ inches) on his first and third attempts to be among the top nine of 17 competitors make the final. However, he did not surpass that mark with two fouls and 15.16 on his final attempt.
“Nate had a very solid competition. He had a few great jumps and a couple which got away, but jumping just shy of his indoor personal best and another All American finish leaves me extremely proud of him,” said Wingate head coach Travis LeFlore.
DeVonte Steele of Texas A&M University-Commerce was the winner with a best mark of 16.25m.
Patterson will now turn his attention to the outdoor season. Wingate’s first outdoor meet of the 2018 season is 16-17 March 16-17, when the Bulldogs will participate in the Charlotte 49er Classic. The South Atlantic Conference outdoor track and field championship meet is slated for 20-21 April.
