Robinson gets the nod
- Updated: 19 May 2017

After starting the season on the sidelines injured, Raheem Robinson is making his presence felt in the Cayman Premier League. Over the course of the past week, he scored three goals and helped set up at least one more to lead his team to back-to-back wins.
On Sunday, 14 May, Robinson scored twice as he led Elite to a 3-0 over Roma United and returned three days later to be involved in both goals for his club’s 2-1 win over Sunset FC.
“It always feels rewarding to contribute to the team in goals and not just effort,” the 24-year-old forward told CaymanSportsBuzz.com upon being named our Footballer of the Week presented by Futbolista World.
Locked in a battle for a second-place finish in the league with rivals Scholars International, Robinson said they entered Sunday’s fixture with a clear mission. “We went out with a game plan that we need to get goals.”
He scored in the 16th and 70th minutes after Christopher Reeves got the opening goal in the 14th.
“Once we got the early goal, we didn’t push forward as much as we wanted to…we decided to keep cool, keep calm and play [our game], knowing the potential for goals would come as soon as Roma started to move forward and open up gaps in the back. That’s what we did and we scored again and decided to lock shop after that,” Robinson said.
In Wednesday’s game against Sunset, Robinson found himself on the finishing end of a scoring opportunity born out of solid team play with Raul Rodriguez getting the ball to Miguel Simms, who crossed it to him in front the goal. Later, he started the attack that saw Rodriguez connecting with Wesley Robinson to put them up 2-0 in a game that ended 2-1.
“It’s even more rewarding when it’s not a solo goal but a team effort, three or four individuals involved in one goal,” he said.
At a brief ceremony, Robinson was presented with a certificate, a Futbolista World sports shirt, and a gift certificate to be used toward new gear at Futbolista World. He has also been entered into a draw to win an additional prize from Futbolista World at the end of the season.
Each week, Cayman Sports Buzz will select a player for the Footballer of the Week honour based on their performance in any of the following leagues: Cayman Premier League, CIFA Women’s Premier League, CIFA First Division, CIFA youth leagues and the CUC Primary Football League/Girls Primary Football League.
At the end of the season, Cayman Sports Buzz will be presenting a more substantial award to the Footballer of the Year.
