Scholars, Future, Latinos out front early

Latinos FC (red/white) overcame a two-goal deficit to stun Elite SC.

Scholars International, Future Sports Club and Latinos FC were among the winners of Week 3 action of the Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) Premier League and positioned themselves as leaders during the early stages of the 2017/18 season.

As persistent rains associated with Tropical Storm Phillipe drenched the islands, two of the six fixtures scheduled for the weekend were postponed on Friday and Saturday (27/28 October). The salivating clash between Academy Sports Club and defending champions Bodden Town FC was one of the casualties to the weather on Friday night. On Saturday, the match between Sunset Football Club and Cayman Athletic was also postponed.

In the games that were played, Scholars International traveled to Cayman Brac for a Saturday night affair. It ended up being one-way traffic, as Scholars picked up their second win of the season with a 6-1 result. Rodrick Pearson led the charge with a goal in each half for Scholars.

On Sunday at Ed Bush Sports Complex in West Bay, Elite looked assured of three points after 45 minutes of play, sporting a 2-0 lead at the interval thanks to a 10th minute finish from Raul Garcia Rodriguez and a 38th minute penalty kick from Sharkur Silburn. However, Latinos put on the pressure after the break and got on the score sheet in the 51st thanks to Leonon McKenzie Martinez. The equaliser came four minute later courtesy Ronald Zelaya. Bayron McCoy stunned Elite when he hit the winner in the 78th to seal a 3-2 win for Latinos, who open the season with back-to-back wins.

In the late game at Ed Bush, Future survived a barrage of attempts from George Town SC, thanks to quality work between the pipes from Renaldo Bodden. Courtney Duval and Michael Johnson teamed up to provide the game’s only goal with Johnson hitting the back of the net in the 67th minute. Future is undefeated through three games, winning two and drawing the other to match Scholars’ seven points but sit below them on goal difference and just ahead of Latinos, who have played one fewer game. Meantime, North Side SC beat East End United 2-0 at the Annex with Dwayne Wilson scoring the opening goal in the 37th minute before Guiton King doubled the lead five minutes later from the penalty spot.

Tigers FC had the scheduled bye, while Roma United are set to play the National U20 Men’s Team at the Annex on Wednesday starting 7:30 p.m.
