Scholars, Sunset close gap on Elite

Ericia Burke (19) was played well in midfield for Scholars.

Scholars International handed leaders Elite Sports Club their first defeat of the season, while Sunset Football Club scored 16 goals in a shutout win over George Town Sports Club in week five of the 2017/18 CIFA Women’s League.

Scholars International 1-0 Elite SC

After a lackluster first half that ended scoreless, the intensity picked up at Ed Bush Sports Complex for the second 45 minutes on Sunday night, 4 March.

Both goalkeepers, Kristina Seymour of Scholars and Kiara Lemay of Elite, were called into action as the ball found its way toward goal more frequently after the break. Both were solid with their denials, until a fumble by Lemay in the 67th minute allowed Susani Lucas a clear path inside the 18-yard box to put the ball into the back of the net for the ninth time this season.

Susani Lucas was in a dancing mood when she scored.

With Scholars leading 1-0 with 23 minutes left, supporters from both sides urged their teams on.

A few minutes later, Elite midfielder Shanice Monteith, who entered the game at the start of the second half, hit the crossbar from a free kick. A few possessions later, Seymour was drawn wide chasing a ball in the box but Monteith’s shot hit the post.

Another scoring opportunity for Elite was shutdown when Seymour denied a pouncing Shanelle Frederick in the 85th minute.

The result allowed Scholars International to pull within three points of Elite SC, who won their previous four outings. This was Scholars’ third win of the season.

George Town Sports Club 0-16 Sunset Football Club

You’d be forgiven for reading that score twice to make sure you saw correctly. Sunset FC dominated the fledgling George Town SC side on Saturday night, 3 March, at Ed Bush Sports Complex.

Lauren Scott led the way with nine goals, to bring her league-leading season count to 12. Scott’s goals came in the 8th, 16th, 25th, 32nd, 41st, 58th, 73rd, and 88th minutes.

Shenel Gall also beat the keeper four times in the 15th, 23rd, 45th and 57th minutes.

Like Scholars, Sunset SC is now three points back of Elite but sit second due to superior goal difference.
