Smith takes race two of cycling season

Veteran Michele ‘Mitch’ Smith was first across the line at the end of the Batabano Circuit Race on 8 April, the second race of the Cayman Islands Cycling Association’s 2018 season.

The race featured 21 cyclists riding the 2.3-mile loop for 45 minutes before battling for supremacy over three added laps.

Smith, competing in the Masters class, finished in 59:03.726 at an average speed of 23.365 mph. Gareth van den Bergh was second in 59:05.997, and James Smith third overall in 59:06.281. Patrick Harfield, who won the first race of the season, a time trial in March, was fourth overall and third among category one riders behind van den Bergh and Smith.

Jeffery Jakubiak (eighth overall) topped category two, while Denver Casayuran (fifth overall) was first among category three riders. Pablo Ebanks was the leader in category four. See full and category standings below.

The next cycling event is the Feed Our Future Century Mile on 15 April starting at 5:00 a.m. at Ristorante Pappagallo. However, the next competitive race is the Dew Cycling Classics series opener, a 58-mile road race starting and finishing at Clifton Hunter High School in Frank Sound on 6 May.
