Sunset Rangers win U11 Boys’ FA Cup

Sunset Rangers 2017 U11 Boys FA Cup champions.

Sunset FC Rangers are the winners of the Cayman Islands Football Association’s U11 Boys’ FA Cup after a tight contest against Savannah Tigers FC ‘A’ at the Annex on 3 June, 2017.

Rangers started purposefully, with clean passing and controlling possession through much of the first half and took the lead when Tigers were undone by an own goal while attempting to clear a corner from in front of their goal.

Tigers though could not find an equaliser, nor did Rangers any more goals despite constantly pressuring the goal. In the end, it was 1-0 in favour of Rangers in a tough defensive battle.

“It was a solid performance. It was one of the best games we’ve had all season,” said Rangers coach, Richard Golden.

“We were a bit more organised moving the ball around and taking advantage of open opportunities – our forwards were shooting more and our backline was solid…they kept their shape for the whole game. It was hard to get past them,” he added.

“It was a great game overall and we’re happy to win the cup,” Goulden told CaymanSportsBuzz.com, adding that Savannah provided a tough challenge for his side.

“They were very good. Savannah has been an improving team all season. They’re a big, strong side…they’ll be a force next year, for sure.”

Meantime, the coach of Savannah Tigers ‘A’, Alejandro Chisholm, acknowledged Rangers’ superior ball control.

“From the first whistle, the Sunset team was all over them. They simply wanted it more. My boys didn’t wake up until the end of the game and it cost us the game. The goal that scored, a simple corner that should have been dealt with but those things happen in football.”

Looking ahead to next season, Chisholm said around half of his players will move on and only play at the U13 level and others would be drafted in from the club’s ‘B’ team. He’s optimistic of better things next season.

“The talent level is good, it’s just trying to instil the proper work ethic in them during training, so they can come out and prove themselves in games,” he said.
