Sunset U13 girls cap sensational season
- Updated: 10 May 2017

It was a sensational season for the U13 girls of Sunset Football Club, which culminated with a 6-1 win over Elite Sports Club in the FA Cup final on 6 May 2017.
The scores were level after the first half, with Sunset’s Kasey Golding scoring in the 12th minute and the team conceding an own goal.
The teams looked even going into the break but Sunset broke free when play resumed with captain Molly Kehoe scoring twice in two minutes (35’ and 36’). Golding extended the lead in the 45th before Katriona Williams made it 5-1.
Neither side seemed willing to take their foot off the gas and Kehoe was rewarded with her hat-trick in the 59th minute with an amazing goal that saw her get from the ground and fire a shot into the back of the net.
“It was really fun out there. We played well and I’m glad we won,” said Kehoe. Alexia Bromfield added: “It was really tough but we made it through.”
Coach Gisela Gamba said she was pleased with the progress the girls showed throughout the season.“Compared to the first game, they all developed better as a team and individually. So, I’m quite happy with how things went,” she told CaymanSportsBuzz.com.
However, she acknowledged that getting a team of 16 young ladies together for a season of football is more than what’s reflected on the scoresheet when the final whistle blows.
“At this age, it’s beyond winning. It’s just getting them to love the game, understand sportsmanship, team spirit and develop through the game,” she said.
- Elite’s girls played well despite the final score.
- Sunset and Elite were the top teams all season.
Gamba said she was pleased with the quality of play in the league overall, not just among her squad. “This is a good opportunity for the [Cayman Islands Football] Association to realise the potential we have. Most of these players are Caymanians, so it’s about time we do something with these players and put them to train together as a national team,” she added.
