Top junior ready for Legends tennis
- Updated: 7 February 2018

Tennis legends Jimmy Connors, Stefan Edberg and Pat Cash may have retired from competitive tennis before Claire Liu was born, but the 17-year-old American is excited about sharing the court with them at Legends at Camana Bay this Friday, 9 February.
Also joining them for the celebrity tennis event is reigning US Open champion, Sloane Stephens. “They’ve all won Grand Slams, so that’s amazing. To be on the court with them would be a great experience,” said Liu, who won the 2017 Wimbledon junior title.
Lui, who is currently the number four ranked junior player in the world, is also looking forward to her first trip to the Cayman Islands. “I’m definitely looking to have some fun, hang with the kids and play with the great legends,” she told CaymanSportsBuzz.com ahead.
The one-night event begins at 7:30 p.m. with mixed doubles featuring Cash and Stephens versus Connors and Liu, followed by Stephens and Liu playing singles. The night culminates with singles between Edberg and Cash, who combined have over 75 career titles including Wimbledon, the Australian Open, and US Open trophies.

“They’re all very excited…everyone’s ready,” said Chris Duggan, VP of Community Development for event organiser and sponsor Dart.
He said another entertaining evening is on the cards, following on from last year when John McEnroe engaged in theatrics with spectators.
“Jimmy and Pat Cash always have a bit of charisma. John McEnroe is a hard act to follow but I think Jimmy is up for it. If we challenge Jimmy and tell him what John did last year, I think he will try and trump McEnroe,” Duggan said. That should be an easy task to riling up Connors, considering the epic rivalry he had with fellow American, McEnroe, during their playing days.
Meantime, Liu, who has been training with the US Fed Cup team ahead of coming to Cayman, had this piece of advice to young players: “Keep having fun and keep working hard if you want something. If you keep working hard, you can get to where you want to be.”
