Trio of sailors competes in Europe
- Updated: 31 March 2018

Three young sailors have headed to Italy to represent the Cayman Islands at the 36th Meeting of Lake Garda in Italy.
Making the trip are Optimist Sailors Matheo Capasso, George Hider and Jaspar Nielsen – all students at Cayman International School. They are among 1300 sailors at the competition.
“The regatta is expected to break its current Guinness World Record for the largest single-class regatta in the world, making our Cayman Sailors world record holders. This unique regatta also features a Country Cup one day race, where the top-ranking sailor from each entering country is invited to participate,” stated a post on the Cayman Islands Sailing Club’s Facebook page.
It added that Matheo Capasso is competing against 25 of the best sailors in the world, proudly bearing the Cayman flag under the watchful eyes of his teammates, a thousand other young sailors from round the globe and hundreds of other sailing-crazed spectators.
From Italy, the Cayman sailors head to the Netherlands to compete at the International Opti Spring Regatta. It is expected to provide a good test of their readiness for competing at the North American Championships to be held in Mexico at the end of June. The three will be joined in Mexico by their teammate James Costa.
Capasso and Hider will go on to compete at the World Championships in Cyprus at the end of August. According to the post, these events will mark the first time the Cayman Islands will sent a full team of four sailors to the North American Championships and a team to the Worlds.
