U18 ruggers head to Tropical 7s

The Tradeview Markets Cayman Boys U18 Rugby Team headed to Orlando on 28 March to compete in the Tropical 7s International Youth Tournament, where they are among a strong field of teams from the United States, Canada, Mexico, and as far away as Zimbabwe.

After settling in later today, the boys will have a chance for a team outing to an NBA game. “It is important on these rugby trips that we are able to fit in a team outing where the boys can have fun and gel as a team off the field. This experience will be new for many of them but is always good to open their eyes to the level of professional sport in general,” a Cayman Rugby Football Union statement pointed out.

Players from all participating teams will have the opportunity to compete in the rugby combine which will be set up at the Tropical 7s fields. This will give the boys a benchmark and allow them to see how they match up against their counterparts in individual skills, speed, strength etc.

“It will also give them an awareness of what is to come as they start thinking about college. Many of the colleges in the USA will incorporate similar aspects into their rugby trials and even combines such as this one attracts scouts from colleges and universities to take a look at upcoming talent,” the CRFU noted.

For Tradeview Markets Cayman U18 team, their tournament will start on Friday, 30 March, with three games:
12:45 p.m. (11:45 a.m. in Cayman) Cayman Islands vs Ontario Junior Blues (Canada)
3:15 p.m. (2:15 p.m. in Cayman) Cayman Islands vs Palm Beach Phoenix (USA)
4:55 p.m. (3:55 p.m. in Cayman) Cayman Islands vs Indian River (USA)

On Saturday they start the day with their final pool before going into the knockout rounds:
10:15 a.m. (9:15 a.m. in Cayman) Cayman Islands vs Zambezi Steelers (Zimbabwe)
