U20 men lose Brac Cup opener

Johnson & Wales University – 5,  CI National U20 Men – 2

After a sluggish start to the opening fixture of the Brac Cup International 2016, in which they conceded three goals in the first 20 minutes, the Cayman Islands National U20 Football team was defeated by a visiting side from Johnson & Wales University on Friday, 26 August.

An own goal in the 7th minute put Cayman behind but it was not until the 19th minute that the visitors found the back of the net for themselves. Francisco Bartoli sailed a shot from just outside the box over the head and outstretched arms of David Lee in the Cayman goal to double the lead.

A minute later, Lee was beaten again when Patricio Rolon drove a shot past him to give Johnson & Wales University a 3-0 lead.

Jermaine Wilson (20) opened the scoring for CIU20 Men.

Gregory McDoom added another in the 27th minute and Valentin Salinas joined in the scoring in the 34th minute to extend the visitors’ lead to 5-0. Two minutes later, Cayman’s Jermaine Wilson found himself all alone on a breakaway and slotted the ball home to open the scoring for his side.

Johnson & Wales University took a 5-1 lead into halftime.

With a comfortable lead, Johnson & Wales sought to play more possession, as the Cayman side put forward a more organized effort on the pitch. In what was the best scoring chance for Cayman to that point for the second half, Christopher Reeves volleyed a shot toward the Johnson & Wales goal in the 70th minute but despite beating the keeper, the shot hit the post and he was denied.

Johnson & Wales University was down to 10 players after substitute Tim Petersen collected his second yellow card in the 80th minute and was sent off.

D'Andre Rowe converted a PK just before time expired.

A penalty kick by D’Andre Rowe, who had come on in the second half as a substitute, gave Cayman’s U20s their second goal moments before the final whistle.
