What Brown can do for you!

The retired US goalkeeper Brad Friedel once summed up the position he played by saying “for a goalkeeper, there is no hiding place”. For someone of the stature of Jermaine Brown, standing around 6’4” tall, that’s often true and proved to be true in the quarterfinal clash between rivals Scholars International and Elite SC in the CIFA President’s Cup on 11 December.

After going through regulation scoreless, the teams played overtime then had to settle for a penalty shootout.

“The game was a pretty good game. The two teams fought through the 90 minutes but nobody took their chances,” said Brown, Scholars’ keeper.

It’s in a penalty shootout that a goalkeeper has nowhere to hide with all attention on them. Scholars’ veteran netminder made a couple of critical saves to deny his rivals from advancing.

“I’m a very experienced goal keeper. I saw some of their guys looking nervous coming at me, so I got the better of them and saved three of them,” said Brown, the first choice between the sticks for Scholars for the past decade.

“Elite were happy they got their chance with penalty kicks but we got the better of them.”

Prior to the start of the season, Scholars International players and coaches made their aim clear: Their plan was not only to win the league for a third straight year, they wanted to clean up all the hardware. A popular courier company asks “what can brown do for you” but you don’t have to ask Scholars because their Brown can make critical plays to help them advance, as they’re now two wins away from winning the President’s Cup.

“We have the team to get through the last two rounds, so hopefully we’re going to keep the cup in our hands,” Brown said, as he hopes his stellar play in goal will be the base that leads his club back up the standings from their fourth spot when the league resumes.

So, while keepers often get mentioned for a slip up, Brown stands tall as the Cayman Sports Buzz Footballer of the Week presented by Futbolista World.

Brown was presented with a certificate, a Futbolista World sports shirt, and a gift certificate to be used toward new gear at Futbolista World. He has also been entered into a draw to win an additional prize from Futbolista World at the end of the season.

Each week, Cayman Sports Buzz will select a player for the Footballer of the Week honour based on their performance in any of the following leagues: Cayman Premier League, CIFA Women’s Premier League, CIFA First Division, CIFA youth leagues and the CUC Primary Football League/Girls Primary Football League.

At the end of the season, Cayman Sports Buzz will be presenting a more substantial award to the Footballer of the Year.
