Barnes 8th in discus, Brown misses hurdles final

Cayman Islands national record holder Lacee Barnes finished eight in the women’s discus at the 2018 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Colombia Tuesday night (31 July), while hurdler Rasheem Brown missed out on the finals of the 110m event the prior evening.

Barnes, who was back in action after injuring herself at the IAAF U20 World Championships earlier in July, had a best mark of 46.25 metres. That placed her ahead of rivals from Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Cuba’s Yaime Perez Tellez won gold in a games record of 66.00 metres, with compatriot Denia Caballero Ponce second (65.10m) and Jamaica’s Shaniece Love third with a season’s best of 58.40.

On Monday, Brown failed to advance to the final of his favourite event, the 110m hurdles after finishing in 14.97 sec, the slowest of a dozen racers to complete the semifinals. This came a day after he struggled in the 100m sprint.

He, too, is coming off the IAAF U20 World Championships in Finland and is expected to compete at the 2018 North American, Central American and Caribbean Championship in Toronto, Canada starting next week.
