Brac’s Martin getting exposure in Jamaica

Cayman Brac’s Michael Martin, who is playing with Harbour View FC in Kingston, was among more than 50 footballers in Jamaica to be part of a special training session with top coaches last week.

The two-day event was sponsored by Red Stripe in association with Nike. The sporting apparel company had professional trainers on hand to lead skills training on the opening day that included speed and accuracy drills.

The teenager was of six Harbour View FC players to participate. They and others who play in the Red Stripe Premier League, Jamaica’s top domestic competition, were kitted out with gear from Nike.

“The aim of this series of development programmes is to aid player development, to create international talent coming out of the Red Stripe Premier League from the pool of players,” explained Red Stripe assistant brand manager, Reshima Kelly.

Kelly said a focus on personal development was twinned with skills developed on the pitch. “We are also looking at grooming, social media etiquette, responsible drinking, dining room etiquette and interview skills. The aim is to look at ways to improve every aspect of the individuals for life.”

Martin joined the ‘Stars from the East’ in September as part of a partnership forged by Harbour View FC’s general manager, Clyde Jureidini, with Cayman Brac Sports Instructor Harold Mitchum Sanford and Steve Smith, who coaches Cayman Brac FC with Sanford.

In a previous interview with CaymanSportsBuzz.com, Jureidini said the plan was to slowly prepare Martin for international exposure. “We have scouts, agents and clubs who are always in contact with us, who are always looking for talent. If he shows himself to be worthy, then they’ll probably have a look at him. If not, then we’ll look at other exposure [opportunities],” he said last November.
