Cayman cricketers drop second straight

The Cayman Islands lost its second consecutive match at the ICC World Cricket League Div 5 tournament on Monday, 4 September, being beaten by Guernsey by six wickets at the Willowmoore Park B Field in Benoni, South Africa.

Winning the toss and batting first, Cayman scored 214 for nine wickets off their allotted 50 overs. Opener Sacha De Alwis top-scored with 60 off 73 balls including seven boundaries.

Captain Ramon Sealy being promoted up the order to number three after a duck in the first game a day earlier, had he second highest score for Cayman: 36 with four boundaries. De Alwis and Sealy put on a 73-run second wicket partnership.

Ryan Bovell scored 28 and Conroy Wright scored 21. David Hooper took five wickets for 36 runs off his allotted 10 overs.

In reply, Guernsey sauntered to 216 for four off 36.3 overs – with 81 balls to spare. Openers Matthew Stokes and Josh Butler lay a solid foundation, putting on 97 runs before Stokes was trapped lbw to Conroy Wright in the 18th over for 31.

Butler and Oliver Newey did the bulk of the work before Butler (93) was caught behind by Sealy off the bowling of Alessandro Morris in the 25th over. Newey made 54 before being bowled by spinner Kevin Bazil.

Wright, who took the new ball, was the most economical of the Cayman Islands bowlers, surrendering 25 runs from eight overs at an economy rate of 3.12.

A day earlier, Cayman Islands lost to Qatar by 93 runs and will play Italy in their final group game on Wednesday (6 September). The loss means Cayman will not make the semifinals and has been eliminated from contention for promotion to ICC World Cricket League Div 4 next year.

Cayman advanced to the tournament from the Americas Division qualifiers earlier this year, sweeping Argentina in a three-match series in the South American country.
