Cayman Cup serves off this month

The Cayman Islands Tennis Club is set to host top-level action in a few weeks with the return of the Cayman Cup.

The International Tennis Federation sanctioned tournament runs 29 October to 5 November and will attract around 250 players, many from overseas. It will feature U14 and U18 youth age groups, as well as seniors from 35 years and older.

“The inaugural year last year was so successful. We had over 100 juniors from around the world participate. This year’s success is going to be even greater,” said tournament director, Karl Hale.

He said the quality of the facilities at the club and the level of organisation last year were a big part of the decision to hold the tournament again.

The under 18’s ITF event is already set with a talented pool of juniors coming from all over the world.  Juniors under 14 years-old can enter by contacting Rob Seward at the Cayman Islands Tennis Club (citennis@candw.ky) by 21st October at noon.

“It’s fantastic for the sport of tennis in Cayman,” said Seward, noting that players from top international academies have been confirmed to participate. “The excitement that these players bring to the island and to our local kids is huge because it gives them something to play for.”

Before the finals of the tournament on 5 November, there will be a free clinic for adults and children starting at 5:00 p.m. Registration can be done on www.caymancup.ca or by emailing citennis@candw.ky.

Hale said there was an added bonus for the top local players. “We inviting four of the top juniors from Cayman up to the Rogers Cup [in Canada], where they can have an up-close, personal experience with some of the top players in the world. We’re trying to use this to promote the sport and get the juniors excited about playing professional tennis,” he said.
