The Cayman Islands dropped their third straight match at the ICC World T20 Americas Finals 2019 on 21 August, when they lost by six wickets to hosts, Bermuda. The result effectively means Cayman’s chances of advancing have just about disappeared.

Playing at at White Hill Field, Sandys Parish, Cayman batted first and 116 for 9 off their 20 overs with opener Chad Hauptfleisch top scoring with 42 runs off 39 balls, including three 4s and a six. Darren Cato (20) and Sacha DeAlwis (19) were the other main contributors. Medium pacer Onais Bascome took four wickets for 10 runs off three overs.

In reply, Bermuda started shaky and were 36 for three in the seventh over before the middle order got settled and steered the team to victory with 28 balls to spare, losing only one more wicket along the way. Delray Rawlins top scored with 49 off 31 balls. Cayman’s skipper, Alessandro Morris took two wickets for 17 runs, with spinner Alistair Ifill and seamer Troy Taylor each nabbing a wicket.

This defeat followed similar results versus the other two teams in the tournament, Canada and the United States earlier in the week. With the top two teams moving on to the next round of qualifying, and Cayman at the bottom of the table, their chances of being part of the top pair have been dashed.

Cayman plays Canada on Friday, then the United States on Saturday and Canada on Sunday to close out the tournament.

Meantime, ICC Americas Finance and Operations Officer, Andrea Hufferd, has mandated a change of venue. The tournament has been taking place between the National Sports Centre and White Hill Field. All remaining matches will be played at White Hill Field.

“After seeing the conditions of the pitch on August 19th, we feel the pitch is unsuitable for international play. This is a World Cup Qualifying event and as such the integrity of the surfaces need to be at a standard which is fair for all,” she said about the venue that saw both Cayman and the United States struggle to score runs on in their match.
