A wet and windy morning didn’t deter runners who turned out for the 2017 Cayman Islands Cross Country Championships hosted by Race Caribbean on Sunday, 8 January. In the end, two stars of 345 Athletic Club, Dominic Dyer and Tiffany Cole emerged as the male and female winners.

Dyer repeated as champion when completed the three-mile route on the North Sound Golf Club course in 22 minutes 30.3 seconds, pulling away from training partner Will Edwards with about half a mile to go.

Dominic Dyer won for the second straight year.

Edwards finished second in 22:56.6, while an improving 13-year-old Levi Superville (23:01.6) edged Matt Volkwyn (23:04.9) for the third spot. Aaron Walker was fifth in 23:38.8.

Cole, who like Dyer has been in top form recently, easily won the women’s race, finishing 10th overall. Her time of 24:01.9 was a little more than three minutes ahead of Gill Comins (27:03.4), the second female finisher. Doris Aralyn was the third female across the line in 27:13.7. Elecktra McEarlean (28.50.2) and Michelle Vinton (28:57.7) were fourth and fifth.

Tiffany Cole won for the second time.

The 2016 women’s winner, Joanna Mansi, did not defend her title, having moved to the United Kingdom. Cole won the inaugural event two years ago.

Unlike the majority of distance races on the local sporting calendar, there was no on-road component – the race took place along grass and trail. It also featured several youth runners.
