Foster is back as Footballer of the Week

It’s easy to be judged in comparison to your peers. But what happens when you’re on the same playing field as men twice your age? For 16-year-old Kareem Foster, playing in the Cayman Premier League has its challenges but he’s adapted well. He also gets the chance to play in the U17 Boys League with friends his own age.

In the past week, he’s been presented with the opportunity to shine on both stages. On Sunday, 5 February, he suited up for the senior team for the first leg of the CIFA President’s Cup semifinals against Scholars International.

With his side trailing early against the defending league champions, Foster played well on the left wing, creating scoring opportunities. Scholars’ defenders were on their heels, as the teenager kept pressing. His persistence paid off when he scored in the 87th minute when he cut the lead to one goal but it was too little, too late on the day.

Foster returned to the pitch for the U17 FA Cup on Wednesday and gave the Academy SC ‘B’ team more trouble than a calculus exam, as he pushed forward persistently with pace and skill. He scored one of his side’s five goals, as they won the title.

While Foster’s name showed up on the scoresheets for both games, it was his continued all-round brilliance that got him the nod as the Cayman Sports Buzz Footballer of the Week presented by Futbolista World. It’s the second time the young star has won the award. He was the first winner when we launched the award in November.

“He’s beginning to kick the free kicks like he wants to kick them again. He’s moving the ball faster. I think playing in the men’s league could contribute to that, as he’s playing against faster and stronger guys,” said Cayman Athletic technical director Ernie ‘Gillie’ Seymour.

Hear from him in his own words about his play this week:

It’s been a week of sporting excellence for the Clifton Hunter High School student. He won gold in the high jump at his school’s field events day ahead of Sports Day.

Foster was presented with a certificate, a Futbolista World sports shirt, and a gift certificate to be used toward new gear at Futbolista World. He has also been entered into a draw to win an additional prize from Futbolista World at the end of the season.

Each week, Cayman Sports Buzz will select a player for the Footballer of the Week honour based on their performance in any of the following leagues: Cayman Premier League, CIFA Women’s Premier League, CIFA First Division, CIFA youth leagues and the CUC Primary Football League/Girls Primary Football League.

At the end of the season, Cayman Sports Buzz will be presenting a more substantial award to the Footballer of the Year.
