New 1st VP for Athletic Association

Liz Smith will serve as CIAA 1st VP for the next two years.

Members of the Cayman Islands Athletic Association (CIAA) on Wednesday night voted in Liz Smith as the newest member of its executive committee. Smith defeated former 1st Vice President Theo Cuffy in an election to fill the post that the latter resigned from earlier in the year.

The election was one of the agenda items at the CIAA’s Annual General Meeting, which started at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex VIP Room on 31 October 2018.

Ahead of the vote, Smith appealed to those in attendance to support her candidacy, pledging to focus on governance and administration, saying those areas are not at a level where they should be. She added that there is a sense that athletes are becoming disenfranchised by the actions of the national body.

“The matters of the Athletic Association has concerned me considerably,” Smith said. “One thing I will assure you, is that I will be dedicated and committed to serve in the interests of the athletes of the Cayman Islands.”

Cuffy asked voters to allow him to see out the remaining two years of his term after resigning earlier this year, only to seek to have that decision rescinded. “I made a serious mistake of offering my resignation because I was pushed into a corner,” he said, adding “there are certain things that must be unsaid.”

He said he has supported the athletes for the past 23 years and desired to continue.

In the end, a majority of the 31 members present who were eligible to vote entrusted their confidence Smith to take up the position on the executive headed by President Lance Barnes.
