In the beautiful game, the aim is to score more than your opponent. That’s a concept not lost on 15 year-old Tamoy Phillips, the Cayman Sports Buzz Footballer of the Week presented by Futbolista World.

In her first season with Elite Sports Club, she’s developed a knack of putting balls into the back of the net.

This past weekend was no different. Actually, she was quite prolific. Phillips scored a hat-trick to lead her side past Alliance FC with a 4-2 win in CIFA’s Women’s League on 3 December. She scored her first goal three minutes into the game. Her next strike came in the 61st minute before she added another, seven minutes before full time.

“I have to say that Shanice [Monteith] gave me good balls and without her, I don’t think I would score most of my goals. She’s a very good winger and forward. She is Elite’s backbone,” Phillips said, sharing the praise with her captain, who has also been having a good season.

The young forward admitted that they underestimated their opponent in what they figured would have been an easy three points. “When we scored our first goal and they came back but we got a pep talk and we got back into the game and then we scored two more.”

The win put Elite ahead of defending champions Sunset FC in the standings for the first time this season.

The Clifton Hunter High School student said she likes to model her game after Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Like the Manchester United player, she has been having a good season, scoring five goals in the past two games and credits Elite’s coaching staff for the work they’ve put in.

Phillips was presented with a certificate, a Futbolista World sports shirt, and a gift certificate to be used toward new gear at Futbolista World. She has also been entered into a draw to win an additional prize from Futbolista World at the end of the season.

Each week, Cayman Sports Buzz will select a player for the Footballer of the Week honour based on their performance in any of the following leagues: Cayman Premier League, CIFA Women’s Premier League, CIFA First Division, CIFA youth leagues and the CUC Primary Football League/Girls Primary Football League.

At the end of the season, Cayman Sports Buzz will be presenting a more substantial award to the Footballer of the Year.
