Women’s President’s Cup semi-finals set

2016 Cayman Islands Football Association Women’s President’s Cup champions, Elite SC, open their defence with an enthralling match-up against Scholars International in the semi-finals of the 2017 edition of the tournament.

The draw was supervised by Caribbean Football Union Executive Member and CIFA First Vice President Bruce Blake live on Radio Cayman Thursday, 12 January.

Elite, who beat eventual league and FA Cup champions Sunset FC 3-1 in the President’s Cup Final last year, will meet West Bay rivals Scholars at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, 11 February at the Annex.

“Elite and Scholars is no easy task,” said Elite’s Technical Director Greg Ebanks, who was present for the draw. “At any given time, any team can actually win. It’s going to be entertaining…who is more consistent with those two games should win but it will be challenging.”

In the other semi-final, Alliance FC meets league-leading Sunset FC at 5:45 p.m.

“From the Sunset perspective, we’re a very disciplined team, whereas Alliance is quite a junior team but they are very athletic. I suspect that Sunset will be dominant throughout but…it is a 90-minute game, so anything can happen,” said Sunset player Sophia Dilbert, who represented her club at the draw. She will not play, having been side-lined due to a leg injury, which has seen her miss the action this season.

The teams will play a home-and-away format to decide which of them will advance to the finals on Ash Wednesday.

In the meantime, a rematch of last year’s cup final takes place in the league this weekend. Elite and Sunset play at 8:00 p.m. at the Ed Bush Sports Complex on Saturday, 14 January.

The scheduled match between Scholars International and Alliance FC has been postponed due to the unavailability of a large number of players, who will be attending a funeral.
